Nine Disqualifications of Discipleship

John Perissos

“Faith is not believing in spite of evidence; it’s obeying in spite of consequence.” - Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy

One cannot be Jesus' disciple:

  1. IF - Anything or anyone comes first before God: order of first things (Luke 14:26)
  2. IF - He does prefer his own life: idolatry = self-love (Luke 9:24)(Luke 17:33)
  3. IF - He does not bear his own cross: not Calvary's cross (Luke 14:27)
  4. IF - He does not follow Jesus: Lordship/Submission (Luke 6:46)
  5. IF - He does not count the cost: (not the assets)(Luke 14:28-30)
  6. IF - He does not forsake all: Set affections above (Colossians 3:2)
  7. IF - He does not continue in the Word: Living the Word (John 8:31)
  8. IF - He does not love one another: Selfish in giving, sharing (John 13:34-35)
  9. IF - He does not bear fruit: Must abide in the vine (John 15:1-8)

Here are some additional scripture texts with emphasis added:

John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 12:25 He that loves his life shall lose it; and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Matthew 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Luke 9:59-62 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

It should be obvious that these have practically nothing to do with "Bible knowledge" and everything to do with priorities, commitment, and obedience.  No special training is required; one need not take a church "Twelve Week Discipleship Class" or any such thing.  It's simply "...choose you this day whom ye will serve…" (Joshua 24:15) and then serve with all your heart.
